Today's Bible account addresses a vital question: “What must I do to attain eternal life?” Scripture reminds us that eternal life is a gift of grace, not something we can earn. As we reflect, let’s commit to following Christ and embracing the eternal treasure He offers.
Scripture
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 6:23
“What must I do to attain eternal life?”
This question has been pondered for ages, and its answer remains as vital today as ever.
In Matthew 19:16-22, a rich young man asked Jesus how he could gain eternal life. Though he had kept the commandments, Jesus challenged him to give up his wealth and follow Him. Sadly, the man walked away because he couldn’t let go of his possessions. This story reminds us that eternal life isn't about what we do but about a heart fully surrendered to God.
We might think we can earn our way to heaven by doing good, but Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us we are saved by grace, not by works. Jesus has already paid the price on the cross, offering eternal life as a gift to all who believe in Him (John 3:16).
As we journey through life, let’s consider the following: What are the things holding us back from fully committing to Christ? It could be our job, relationships, or ambitions. These may not be bad, but if they take precedence over our relationship with God, they become obstacles.
Jesus calls us to follow Him, to surrender our lives, and to take up our cross daily (Luke 9:23). This path may require letting go of things we cherish, but in return, He offers something far greater — eternal treasure.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one."
John 10:27-30

REFLECTION
How can you use the Bible's examples to make wiser choices, and use your influence to correct injustice, bring others closer to God and foster a culture of faith, loyalty, good stewardship and integrity?
Reflect on what might be holding you back from fully following Christ. Are there priorities, habits, or attachments that take precedence over your relationship with God? Consider how you can let go of these distractions and focus on what truly matters.
As you go through your day, remind yourself that eternal life is a gift, received not through effort but through grace (unmerited favor). Trust in God’s love, surrender your heart, and follow Him wholeheartedly. The result will be peace and lasting joy, and God will provide all our real needs.

PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you, heavenly Father, for your unfathomable love for me. No one will ever or could ever love me with the pure and unconditional love you have for me. You ask me to believe; belief in your Son, and the price he paid out of his love for me.
I wept in gratitude when I realized how selfish I am in comparison to his astounding love. I lift my voice in praise and sing Joy to the world! The Lord has come, and heaven and nature sing! Prepare our hearts Lord to receive the greatest gift of knowing Jesus. Fill our hearts with joy as we sing praises for your glorious goodness.
In Jesus’ Name, I pray Father.
Amen.
